Medical Emergencies (8/97)
-
Evaluate the
severity of the medical emergency and proceed with first aid. Do not
move victim unless absolutely necessary.
-
Keep uninvolved
adults and children away from scene. A staff member will stay with the
victim while someone calls for appropriate assistance.
-
If Injury is severe
– bleeding from eyes, ears, mouth; irregular breathing or heart rate;
convulsions; broken bones, head injury resulting in unconsciousness; not
breathing; CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY for ambulance or Emergency
Response, then contact parent/guardian.

Stay Calm
-
If not
breathing, begin mouth to mouth respiration

If no pulse,
begin CPR
-
Bleeding, apply
direct pressure and elevate
-
Check for
emergency or medical ID tags and/or medications
-
Do not give
food or liquids
-
Adult,
parent or staff should accompany victim if taken to hospital.

Take Emergency Contact & Consent for Emergency Treatment Form to hospital.
-
Immediately notify
parents or emergency contacts if injury is more serious than minor cuts
and scratches, and obtain specific instructions regarding action to be
taken.

If unable to
contact the family, call the family doctor or clinic.

If unable to
contact the family or family doctor and child needs immediate attention,
call 911.

A
Child Incident Report Form shall be filled out by staff with a
copy to the parent/guardian, a copy will be placed in child’s file, and
the original goes to the Health Services Manager for review within 24
hours. The Health Services Manager will follow up with appropriate
State notification in the case of an unusual incident, injury or death
per state licensing regulations.

If the injury is
determined to be mild, appropriate First AID will be given (ice pack,
cleansing of wound, Band-Aid).

In case of a minor
accident, staff will fill out an “Owie” report. The
original will go to parent/guardian and the copy will be placed in the
child’s file.
