Head Lice Procedure (8/97)

  1. Staff will be trained in detection of head lice as required.
  2. Each Monday or first day of the week that the child is signed in for class, children will be checked for lice.
  • The exam should be conducted with sensitivity in order to lessen anxiety of children. The procedure should be established as routine and non-threatening.
  • The staff should be discreet and maintain confidentiality for child and family where there is a suspected case of head lice.
  • A good light source is required. Outside in the sun may produce the best results.
  • The exam may be done using disposable gloves. The gloves should be changed whenever a suspected case or an old case is examined.
  • When a child is suspected of having lice, or when screening returning students or old cases, the examiners will wash their hands after each examination.
  1. Any child with evidence of head lice must be sent home immediately. The parent is referred to the teacher or Family Advocate for information and follow-up care.
  2. If head lice are identified at any time during the week, the entire class must be rechecked.
