Head Lice Procedure (8/97)
- Staff will be trained in detection of head lice as required.
- Each Monday or first day of the week that the child is signed in for
class, children will be checked for lice.
- The exam should be conducted with sensitivity in order to lessen anxiety
of children. The procedure should be established as routine and
non-threatening.
- The staff should be discreet and maintain confidentiality for child and
family where there is a suspected case of head lice.
- A good light source is required. Outside in the sun may produce the best
results.
- The exam may be done using disposable gloves. The gloves should be
changed whenever a suspected case or an old case is examined.
- When a child is suspected of having lice, or when screening returning
students or old cases, the examiners will wash their hands after each
examination.
- Any child with evidence of head lice must be sent home immediately.
The parent is referred to the teacher or Family Advocate for information
and follow-up care.
- If head lice are identified at any time during the week, the entire
class must be rechecked.
- Parents will be advised to check siblings and other members of the
family.
- Procedures for sanitizing classroom:
- All smocks are to be removed and washed.
- Pillows, stuffed toys, play clothes and other non-washable items
should be placed in plastic bags, tightly sealed, tagged with the day’s
date and placed in the shed for 30 days.
- Lead Center Teacher and Family Advocate is notified so notice can
be sent to all parents. (see notice)
- Lead Center Teacher will advise maintenance person to be extra
