SUBJECT:  Medication Administration

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE: The program establishes and maintains written procedures regarding the administration, handling, and storage of medication for every child.

Policy: Medications and treatments are not routinely given to children at Early Childhood Service, except to those children who have diagnosed special needs and/or chronic health conditions. Medication for any other children should be given by their parents before or after class.

OPERATIONAL PROCEDURE:

The program may modify these procedures as necessary to satisfy State laws, but only where such laws are consistent with Federal laws.

1304.22(c)(1) Labeling and storing, under lock and key, and refrigerating, if necessary, all medications, including those required for staff and volunteers.

  1. Each container shall have an unaltered Pharmacy label

  2. All prescription medications shall be maintained with the child’s name, instructions, and date.

  3. Locked medical box will be kept in locked file cabinet or in the refrigerator.

1304.22(c)(2) Trained staff member(s) or Health Services Manager will administer, handle and store child medications

  1. Teaching staff will be trained, as necessary, by the Health Services Manager.

1304.22(c)(3) All medications (prescription or non-prescription) shall be administered only with the written approval and instructions from the child’s parent and in accordance with label directions as prescribed by the child’s physician.

  1. The appropriate written documentation containing the parents approval and physician's instructions shall be maintained in the child’s record. (see below)

1304.22(c)(4) Maintaining an individual record of all medications dispensed, and reviewing the record regularly with the child's parents;

  1. A monthly Classroom Medication Log is maintained in the child’s file recording the administration of medication or treatment and turned into the Health Services Manager monthly for review.

  2. Depending upon the duration of medication dispensed, parents will be consulted at least monthly regarding medication and updates.

1304.22(c)(5) Recording changes in a child's behavior that have implications for drug dosage or type, and assisting parents in communicating with their physician regarding the effect of the medication on the child.

  1. Changes are recorded in child’s file and a Statement of Concern is generated if needed.

1304.22(c)(6) Ensuring that appropriate staff members can demonstrate proper techniques for administering, handling, and storing medication, including the use of any necessary equipment to administer medication.

  1. The Health Services Manager will assess staff on ability to:

  1. Read labels and prescription directions in relation to required dosage, frequency of administration, storage, and any other conditions.

  2. Use age-appropriate administration techniques to gain the child’s cooperation

  3. Documentation procedures
